Dreams of Blue and White
Santorini, making us dream in Blue and White! In this Design Guide, I will be using a digital photo book of my trip to Greece back in Summer 2016 to show you the key design elements to input in your book!
Why create a Digital Photo Book?
In this digital age, photo books have become very popular to create mementos of vacations and events like birthdays and weddings and to be showed off on social media websites such as Instagram and Facebook!
They are mostly free to make, less time consuming and easily editable! The internet is a huge place where you can easily source for materials. I loved how I was able to freely customise them without having to spend money to print each individual picture and on decorative items such as, stickers and craft paper.
Also, I personally feel that this is a unique way of presenting your trips or telling your stories. You can also send the files to print for a hardcopy! I love using Photobooks(SG) or Printcious when it comes to printing my photobooks or gifts! They offer a wide range of products to cater to your needs!
What software should I use?
However, there are many free templates online but that would impose limitations. Thus, it's better to create your own from scratch!
Still, feel free to use whichever software or apps that you are comfortable with. Photoshop and Illustrator works as well!
Let's start! Select a theme and colour scheme
First, you want to think of a theme. Was it a honeymoon at an Exotic Beach Island? Or was it a Shopping spree Getaway in a Metropolis City? Since mine was at an Island, I decided to go for an old school, seaside scrapbook look.
Second, you want to choose a suitable colour scheme. I was going for blue, white and beige since those are the colours that identify Santorini. Choosing the right scheme is important! Imagine having red and green to represent Santorini? Um... weird. You would also want to try to use the same colours throughout to make your book to look consistent.
Edit your Pictures
You must not skip this step! Don't be lazy, edit your photos!! Select a bunch of your favourite pictures and edit them. I used Photoshop and Lightroom. I added grain to my pictures to create that vintage feel and also balanced out the yellow and the blue tones!
Tip: Add a little bit of pink and orange to your horizons to beautify the sky.
Choose a Cover Photo and Title
Now, choose the most captivating picture you have as your cover page and add in your title. I liked this picture that I took of the famous Blue Dome Churches because it is the landmark of Santorini.
Textures as Backgrounds
Instead of using a plain coloured background why not use textures to create physical illusions? Since I was going for a beach scrapbook theme, I tried to source for " beige rough old paper" texture as my background.
Can't afford to buy a polaroid? Don't worry! Here, on the internet you have unlimited film which you can easily find the templates online!
Stickers and Washi Tapes
Stickers and washi tapes are creative visual elements to decorate your book! Try searching for objects that are associated to the City or location that you are at!
Fill a Picture as a Page
A good way to create contrast to your page is to fill one entire page with a photo. Try experimenting with different layouts to achieve that balance!
Use Poems or Quotes to tell a Story
Be Shakespeare! I like to use poems from hellopoetry and quotes from google! This is definitely a creative alternative to describe your pictures and feelings.
Use your own picture as a Background
It is totally fine to overlap two photos that you took on top of each other as long as they look good! After all using your own photos feels better than taking those off Google!
Create a Food Section!
For the love of food, please have a section about the delicious meals you had!
Convert your page into a postcard because #travelvibes
End your Story
All great things come to an end to welcome another new Adventure! 🙂 It will be awesome if you can get a world map and use it as a design!
I hope that I have inspired you to design your own digital photo book! Nonetheless, if you would like me to design your own personalised photo book whether it is for your own travel keepsake, a gift to a loved one or even business related, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
