- Part 1: How I spent less than SGD 600 (all-in) in Taiwan for 8 days!
- Part 3: First Timers things to do in Taipei!
Prior to my trip, I went onto a Female Solo Backpackers group on Facebook & chatted up with a Taiwanese girl that was so kind and willing to take me around with her friends for both days!
I wished I stayed a little longer because there’s so much to do here! Here’s what we did:
Rainbow Village – 彩虹眷村
So first, we drove to the Rainbow Village a.k.a the Salvation Mountain of Taiwan. This place is entirely hand painted by Mr. Huang- one of the last few remaining residents.
This was the result of an attempt to protest against the government as they wanted to tear down the once old & dull town. We spent about 40mins here taking photos and eating ice cream!
You can reach here by bus but it can get very confusing and takes about an hour from the city! Would highly recommend you to drive around as it will be much more convenient.
If you can’t ride or need a guide, try booking Klook’s Gaomei Wetland & Rainbow Military Community Day Tour! They also provide Scooter Rental services! Use “MOBILE10” to get HK$10 off your first purchase!
Tunghai University & Luce Chapel
The girls recommended me to go here. Apparently, inside the campus, lies the instagrammable Luce Memorial Chapel. There was also a really huge park where people were just having picnic and a shrine!
Next, we took about an hour’s drive to Gaomei Wetlands. We arrived in the evening and I witnessed one of the most beautiful sunsets in my life! This is the closest that I will ever get to Bolivia’s Uyuni sea salt flats.
Eat @ Chin Shui Tang (Must!)
We ended our day by having dinner at Chin Shui Tang. You can’t miss this place when you’re in Taiwan! It’s everywhere! This was where the first bubble tea was made!
I ordered the small cup which was only $4 and it’s bigger & tastes better than the regular Gongcha! I also got the beef noodles.. forgot how much that costs though!
Spent my last day in Taichung at Yizhong street – the Xi Men Ding of Taichung.
I had brunch at the Modern Toilet Restaurant in Taichung and oh my they were very generous with the portion and the price was extremely cheap.
Guess how much did I pay for: Curry beef puff rice + tofu soup Bubble milk tea + Strawberry Ice Shave?! It was only $6 for everything!!!
I was shocked when the bill came and the waitress told me that I got a 50% discount!!! Not sure if they were having a promotion at that time though!
Chung Yo Department Store
Then we went to Chung Yo Department store for toilet hopping. They had different themes for every single toilet so yes we were busy taking mirror selfies. It was a toilet-filled day.
And we parted ways :(! I took the bus from Tai Chung bus terminal to Taipei City at 4pm and reached about 730pm due to heavy traffic during peakhour for $18.
Huge thanks to Jocelyn , Erin & Sungyun for taking me around Taichung! I really enjoyed myself and I wouldn’t have done so much without you girls 🙂
